Er. Sharma has done Civil Engineering in 1958 from Roorkee. He has worked at Bhilai Steel Plant during 1958–1960; Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee during 1960–1965; Structural Engineering Research Centre, Roorkee during 1965–1989; and Structural Engineering Research Centre, Ghaziabad (National Research Laboratory of CSIR, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India) during 1989-2000.
He has vast experience in repair, rehabilitation and retrofitting of Masonry and Concrete structures, Concrete technology, Research and Development, etc. Some of the works carried out by him include UNICEF projects on design and training of ferrocement water reservoir structures and rain-water harvesting; National Drinking water mission projects; Buildings of American Embassy, New Delhi; International Tobacco Company, Ghaziabad; Structure of IDPL Rishikesh; Buildings of Ryan International Schools; Handling structure of Baildila Iron Ore Project, MP; Main dam and tunnels of Tala HEP, Bhutan; Ansal Plaza basement parking, New Delhi; Rohtak Medical college & Hospital building; Multi-storeyed Jammu Inter-state Bus Terminus, Jammu; Old Indraprastha Power House, New Delhi; Transmission complex of Indian Army, Meerut; Fire damaged structures of Narora Atomic Power Plant; Bailadia Iron Ore Project, MP; Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi; Masonry arch bridge over Yamuna Canal, Bhallabhgarh; RCC structure of Khatima Power Station; Janak Setu, Delhi; St. James Church, Kashmiri Gate, New Delhi, etc.
He was a Member, Expert committee, of Handbook on ‘Repair and rehabilitation of RCC structures’, published by CPWD, New Delhi in 2002 and 2011. He was a visiting faculty at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand for three times on Govt. of India secondment for teaching, writing of engineering manuals and organization of training courses for Malaysians and Indonesian Engineers at AIT. He is Life member of many Professional bodies including Indian Concrete Institute; American Concrete Institute-India Chapter; Indian Society for construction materials and structures. He has contributed significantly in the development of Indian Standards. He is Chief Editor of Four Civil Engineering and Architecture Magazines, published by NBM Media Pvt Ltd., New Delhi.
Following patents, developed by him are accepted and are in use:

• SEMI MECHANISED process for producing FC cylindrical units process technology being released by NRDC, New Delhi
• Use of Hollow clay blocks for roofing and walling systems (Handled at SERC, Chennai)
• Reflective verge stones for Highways
• A Pull out equipment for non-destructive testing of concrete. This is important substitute for imported equipment (Handled at SERC, Chennai)
